Sticking to its promise India has handed over a Mi-24 helicopter to Afghanistan as a last consignment of the deal to provide four gunships to fight Taliban.
The first three gunships were handed over to Afghanistan in December, 2015. The delivery of the fourth one was late owing to the non-availability required spare parts which were procured from Russia afterwards.
Afghanistan possesses 40 to 50 helicopters of different types and has An-32 medium transport aircrafts which are unusable for the need of spares. Recently, Indian air force teams visited Afghanistan to discuss restore and repair process with Russian help.
Arrangements might be made by India and Russia in partnership as per which Russia may provide technical parts and Delhi might pay for it. Afghanistan’s wish list to India consists of attack helicopters, ammunition, apart from help in restoring equipment.
